Maintenance And Care Of Wrenches
A quality spanner can last a lifetime if it is cared for and not abused.
Daily care
The wrench must be dry. You need to wipe off the dirt on the surface of the wrench with a clean cloth before storing it, even if it is overnight.
Toolboxes or tool rolls are the best tools for storing wrenches to prevent them from getting dusty. Over time, dust can cause corrosion.
Wrenches should be stored in a dry place because moisture can cause corrosion, and other tools will not fall on them and damage the profile.
Occasional care
Apply a thin layer of oil to the wrench every once in a while. The oil provides a barrier to prevent moisture from reaching the wrench surface and rusting.
Chrome-plated wrenches can benefit from a polish using vehicle metal polish. If you do this, when you first get the tool and every once in a while, the polish can help prevent corrosion and maintain a shiny surface.
Check your wrench occasionally for damage. A damaged wrench can damage the fasteners.
A tool that is bent may be bent back to its original shape, but it will become weaker where it is bent. Be aware that bent tools can easily break weak points, even if they appear to be fixed.
Use during nursing
Always use the fasteners of the correct size wrench. An oversized wrench can damage the fasteners, making it difficult to remove or reinstall. It will also damage the profile of the wrench.
If you are trying to remove or install a fastener, try not to use brute force to solve the situation. There is usually a simple reason why a fastener is stuck. If it can be solved and handled, it will prevent damage to the fastener, wrench, and workpiece.
A permeable oil can help loosen fasteners that have been corroded, while lubricants (such as silicon lubricants) can help tighten fasteners that are too hard to turn during installation.
The wrench should not be hit unless it is an ordinary wrench designed to be used with a hammer to turn the shaft. The ratchet wrench should not be hit, because the impact will damage the ratchet mechanism.
Similarly, it is not recommended to use a pipe or another wrench to extend the wrench shaft to turn hard fasteners, because most tools are not designed to withstand the extra force. If you must do this, use an extension bar and don't hook two wrenches to each other.
